MMT Co-Producer

Our Co-Producer program is designed so that an individual or group can provide support to MMT in order to advance the production of a particular work of rarely produced musical. The idea is to permit people to support works that are of particular interest to them by helping to mitigate the risks to MMT inherent in the production of musicals rarely or never performed locally.

Here is the general outline of the program:

  • Co-Producer agrees to make an donation to MMT to secure the royalties for a particular show (typically between $2,000-$6,000, depending on a variety of factors, including anticipated ticket price, audience size, number of tickets to be sold, the demand for rights, and the licensing agent).
  • MMT and Co-Producer agree on a proposed budget for the show, with MMT being responsible for all aspects of the production.
  • Co-Producer is invited to participate in creative/artistic conversations, in part to assist in making decisions about how best to spend the budget for the show and when variances from the budget make the most sense to create a production that is both an artistic and commercial success. In some instances, Co-Producer may decide to fund additional variances to specified items outside of the original scope of the budget.
  • Predicated on the budget (as modified with the consent of Co-Producer as described above), Co-Producer agrees to make an additional donation to guaranty that MMTā€™s total losses on the production do not exceed some agreed-upon limit. Because the budget is fixed and only subject to increase or variance with the input of Co-Producer, Co-Producer will know in advance the maximum potential losses that may be incurred in excess of the agreed-upon limit.
  • If desired, Co-Producer receives recognition as such in promotional materials, program, and any regular donor acknowledgements.
  • Co-Producer receives up to 10 complementary tickets to the production.

If you are interested in becoming a Minneapolis Musical Theatre Co-Producer please e-mail MMT Artistic Director Joe Hendren at joeh@aboutmmt.org.

OUR MISSION
Minneapolis Musical Theatre is dedicated to providing community access to high quality yet affordable works of musical theatre never before ā€“ or very rarely ā€“ seen by Twin Cities audiences.

Founded in 1992, Minneapolis Musical Theatre (MMT) has staged works both within the Twin Cities and throughout Minnesota.  Originally conceived as a touring troupe by founders Kevin Hansen and Steven Meerdink, MMT traveled the Midwest with a combination of musical reviews and lesser-known musicals.  In 1997/1998 the Minneapolis Musical Theatre produced its first shows in the Twin Cities ā€“Broadway Today and Sweeney Todd ā€“ which initiated a long and very successful partnership with the Bryant Lake Bowl Cabaret Theater.

Minneapolis Musical Theatre was incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1999, and in 2000 became the first ‘Company-in-Residence’ at Bryant Lake Bowl Cabaret Theater.Ā  Its first full season was in 2000-2001, and ever since MMT has grown as a theatrical force in the Twin Cities.

MMT’s first production of its 2002-2003 season, The Rocky Horror Show, opened in October 2002 at Hennepin Stages (formerly Hey City Theater) in the heart of Minneapolis’ Hennepin Theater District.  Over the years, the Minneapolis Musical Theatre has produced a long list of area premieres (PageantPassionA New BrainViolet,When Pigs FlyWeird RomanceLucky StiffMailA Class Act, Bat Boy, Jane Eyre,ConvenienceZombie Prom, Jerry Springer – The Opera, Summer of ’42, Bright Lights Big CityZanna Don’t!, The Great American Trailer Park Musical, Evil Deadbare and Dirty Rotten Scoundrels) and ā€“ in conjunction with the Minnesota AIDS Project ā€“ the area premiere of a one-night-only benefit performance of Elegies for Angels, Punks and Raging Queens in 2003.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press listed MMT’s When Pigs Fly in the ‘Top 10 Productions’ of 2001.  The Minneapolis Star Tribune named MMT’s area premiere of Bat Boy, Outstanding Musical of 2004 (smaller theaters), The Who’s Tommy, one of three Outstanding Musicals of 2005 (smaller theaters) and Zombie Prom, Outstanding Musical of 2007 (smaller theaters).  City Pages honored MMT’s area premiere of Jerry Springer – The Opera as Best Comedy in their ‘Best of the Twin Cities’.

MMT’s October 2008 area premiere of Bright Lights, Big City coincided with a move to the Illusion Theater.  In 2012 Minneapolis Musical Theatre entered into a partnership with Hennepin Theatre Trust and moved into the New Century Theatre in downtown Minneapolis’ City Center complex.
