Area Premiere
Named one of the top 10 productions of 2001 by the St. Paul Pioneer Press!

October 5 – 27, 2001 – Bryant Lake Bowl Cabaret Theater

Conceived by – Howard Crabtree & Mark Waldrop
Music – Dick Gallagher
Sketches and Lyrics – Mark Waldrop

Howard Crabtree wants to be a performer, not – as his high school guidance counselor suggests – a plumber, gardener, or chicken farmer.  Told he will be a success “When pigs fly!”, Howard takes revenge by putting together a musical revue “for people like me” – and it’s a revue like no other!  Featuring such never-to-be-forgotten moments as a Dream Curly Ballet, a series of unrequited love odes to Newt, Strom and Rush (yes – those former political figures!), and a Centaur who ponders why everyone treats him like an outcast, When Pigs Fly entertains with one irreverently outrageous musical number after another.

Reviews and Quotes

“The Minneapolis Musical Theatre attacks this confection with a hearty willingness to look ridiculous, which is not as easy as it sounds.  Kevin Hansen, Steven Meerdink and their band of merry men eagerly display this concept.  Meerdink deserves one other accolade, for his costuming.  These are the kind of cheesy pieces you’d see in a low-budget production of Beauty and the Beast, if Disney had the guts to make fun of itself.  His work is the perfect garnish on a goofy smorgasbord.” – Minneapolis Star Tribune

“If anybody happens to be down in the Lyn-Lake neighborhood in the next couple of days, I wonder if you could take a look around and let me know if you see my backside.  The last time I had my tookus was at Bryant Lake Bowl, watching When Pigs Fly.  I laughed it off then and haven’t seen it since.  Go ahead and try not to laugh.  Your ears would blow off.” – St. Paul Pioneer Press

“Steven J. Meerdink and Kevin Hansen, the powerhouses behind MMT, managed lavish songs, dances, snappy patter, and dozens of outrageous costumes on BLB’s tiny stage.” – Southside Pride
